Sony was a bit shy into entering the consumer camcorder market. The Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation from Tokyo although is shadowing many others electronics sectors it made a strong start on Camcorder market only in 2001 with Sony DCR-VX1000. It was a standard definition MiniDV camcorder. Since thenSony camcorders cover every category of handy cams: video-capable DSLRs, compact or pocket camcorder, high-end, mid-range and professional. The main trait of a Sony camcorder is the user friendly design and features. Even if high end top notch models are fully manual and have advanced features, Sony tried to keep them as easy as possible. By any means this does mean Sony has dumbed down high end models, it means they kept that consumer friendly technology that made them famous.

Sony camcorders as well as digital cams are well known for good video quality they exhibit: Exmor R CMOS low light sensor, three CCDS or 3CMOS all produce and enhance video quality. Sony equipped their latest models with interchangeable lenses, adding a bit to price, but prolonging their life duration.

Sony approached the HD camcorder segment in late 2004 with HDR-FX1, which was the first HDV 3CCD camcorder that supported 1080i. Two years later they were selling Sony HDR-FX7 that was one of the first camcorder below $3,000 to offer full 1080 HD resolution with a three-chip sensor. Same year, in 2006, introduced HDR-SR1 that was their first high definition hard disk drive.

The company made some pocket camcorders lines as well. Sony Bloggie MHS-CM5 was one of theirs top representative in this segment. Although it was reported as a bit bulkier compared with other cams from the same range, the pistol like grip when shooting hooked many users.
