The English Toy Spaniel is a small sized dog which has a body with a more square like shape and if you look at it in a more artistic manner you ill see that the coat flows as if it were a royal dog. It has a very happy personality and a calm temperament. Its coat comes in four varieties which are mahogany red and white, rich mahogany red, white with black and tan markings or also known as the Prince Charles coat and black and tan which is known as King Charles. The last two varieties of the coat are much longer than the others.
The English Toy Spaniel is known to be a favorite among royalty as it appears in many noble portraits from the 17th and 18th and also 19th centuries. Some wonder if this breed is right for them but why shouldnt it be. This dog has a lively temperament and is playful, gentle, happy, is very loving and he is very intelligent. They are well suited companions for the family and they go well with children. All four types of the English Toy Spaniel are easy to care for as all of them groom easily and only require a brushing and combing twice a week. They are well suited to the apartment life due to their small size.
This breed is said to have originated in the Far East and only after a long time it appeared in England, yet there are no concrete details to this. The black and tan were the favorite of the king so these were on the main eye in the breeding program and for a long time many dog were breed without referring to the coat color. The dog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886 and was put in the toy group.
The English Toy Spaniel can have a different range in sizes and can have a weight of 4 to 9 kilograms. The standard breed has a compact body, strong, a domed head and a temperament that can be very charming. All other essential characteristic of this breed are related to the head.
